Classic rock fans will have lots of musical options at this year’s Summerfest. It’s safe to say that the most deserving acts will play the big stage for 2013. The “big three” compliment the already stellar lineup of contemporary and timeless rock bands booked for side stages on the grounds. Headlining bands on some of the smaller stages include Alice Cooper, REO Speedwagon, Styx, and Foreigner.
Now considered a veteran of the Big Gig, Tom Petty takes the Marcus Amphitheater stage for the 13th time on June 28that 8PM. One of the most famous live acts in the history of rock-and-roll, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are in the midst of a small, Midwest summer tour that follows their successful worldwide 2010 tour. On that tour, Chuck Berry joined Tom on the stage during a tour stop in Phoenix. Dubbed Mojo, the tour broke both attendance and revenue records that went back 40 years. Tom is sure to play hits like Refugee and Free Fallin’, though lesser known songs from his 20-plus album repertoire will also be played. The Smithereens will open the night.
Canadian rock pioneers Rush will ring-in America’s independence on July 4. Extending their 2012 world tour, this three-man ensemble brings their Clockwork Angels tour to Summerfest on that night. That same tour and album won Rush the titles of “Band of the Year” and “Album of the Year” at the 2012 Classic Rock Awards.
