  • Packers Versus Bears | An NFL Rivalry That Spans Decades

    Easily forgotten by the Packers recent success against its arch-rival Bears is a fact that most Cheese-heads would choose to ignore: The most historic rivalry in football is currently being won by the team from Illinois 92 – 88, with six ties.
    Mention that fact in Packer country, and you are bound to hear cries of protest. Some will proclaim that decades back there were “bad calls and crooked games” that went the Bear’s way. Others will point to Green Bay’s 13 titles to the Bears nine as a more significant measure of success. Some are happy to remain blissfully ignorant of those decades preceding this current run of Packers versus Bears dominance.
    But, that past does remain. It’s recorded in lore and cold, hard statistics. Ninety-years have passed since 7,000 fans gathered on a blustery November day in 1921 to watch the first-ever meeting between the Chicago Staleys and the Green Bay Packers.
    The Chicago Staleys won that initial match-up, shutting-out the Packers, who were playing in their inaugural season in the National Football League. Chicago had been in that newly formed professional league since 1920, but had only recently moved from Decatur to the state’s largest city. Owner George Halas would christen the team the Bears in 1922 (just one of the two seasons where the pair hasn’t played each other.)
    After their inaugural game at Cubs Park, the Packers-Bears rivalry would be a one-sided affair for 40 years. Chicago came away victorious against Green Bay 49 times between 1921 and 1959. The Packers managed just 26 wins in that same time period. The years during and following World War II were especially unkind to Green Bay. Despite increasing attendance and a new stadium, as well as a barrage of coaching changes, the Packers would win just nine games against the bears through the late 50s. Dubbed the Wilderness era, that period hit rock bottom with their dismal one-win season in 1958. Thankfully, that remains to be their worst single-season record in franchise history.
    Green Bay’s struggles against the Bears didn’t make for unexciting football, however. Experts and fans alike agree that some of the more famous antics in this rivalry’s adolescence serve as evolutionary markers to the birth and development of the game as we know it today. The longest shut-out streak in the rivalry’s history took place during those early years, as the Packers held the Bears scoreless for five consecutive games starting in late 1928.
    • 1924 – Frank Hanny (Chicago) and Walter Voss (Green Bay) are the first professional football players to be ejected for fighting during an NFL game.
    • 1930 – The Bears score their first points against the Packers in nearly two years on November 9th. They wouldn’t win another game against the Packers until December 7th of that year.
    • 1941 – The pair played their first-ever playoff game. Chicago scored 33 points to the Packers 14, going on to win their fourth title against the New York Giants. It would be another 69 years before both teams would meet again the in the postseason.
    Surprisingly, the Bears and the Packers have made the playoffs together just four times since the format was introduced in 1933. In 1994 and 2001, both teams were eliminated in the second round of the postseason. Not until 2010 did the pair play each other for a chance at the Super Bowl, a game that most call the most important meeting in the history of the rivalry.
    Before advancing independently to the NFC Championship game that year, Green Bay and Chicago met for the final regular season game of 2010. The Bears came into the match-up content with a secured first-round bye in the playoffs, though the Packers needed a win to clinch a wild-card spot. In an impressive defensive battle, Green Bay and Chicago put-up just 13 points combined. The Packers would edge-out the Bears with a touchdown, and a 10-to-3. Wins against Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Seattle would pit the pair against each other just weeks later.
    On January 23rd, 2011, Green Bay defeated the Bears at Soldier Field for the right to face Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XLV. The Packers won the game, their fifth Super Bowl championship, and their 13thoverall NFL title.
    The two wins over Chicago that vaulted Green Bay to the 2010 title were part of the 30-plus victories the team has had over their southern neighbor since 1990. The Bears began that decade with five straight wins against the Packers, completing a 15-to-2 run that had begun in 1985. Green Bay would reverse the trend less than two years later. The Packers have enjoyed their most successful time in this hard fought rivalry since then.

    Packers Of The Lombardi Era Take Over

    Not since Vince Lombardi’s team took the field in the 1960s have the Packers had as many wins against Chicago as they have had in the past 20 years. Back then, the Bears fell victim (along with the rest of the league,) to a Packers squad led by Bart Starr and Willie Davis.  The Packers went on to take five league titles in seven years. 15 wins between 1960 and 1969 stand as the most in a single decade for the Packers against their rival. Fast forward to today, and we’re looking at 31 victories since 1990, including six in the past three years. The hot streak has many fans hoping that very soon the Bears will be chasing the Packers record for most wins in this storied rivalry.  

  • Bucks and Badgers To Play At Sanford Pentagon In 2013

    Sioux Falls, South Dakota is giving a pair of Wisconsin teams a chance to play in their new facility. The city of Sioux Falls lies just across the state-line from Minnesota. Sioux Falls will host a pair of games featuring the Milwaukee Bucks and the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team in the newly built Sanford Pentagon. The $19 million venue is scheduled to be completed over the summer, and will become one of the premier basketball complexes in the country.
    The Sioux Falls Skyforce (part of the NBA’s Development League,) is the primary partner in the building’s construction. Affiliated with the Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Orlando Magic, the team will play home games on the Pentagon’s Heritage Court.
    Just one of nine floors housed in the building, the Heritage Court will also play host to the Badgers and Bucks in October and November. With just over 3,000 seats, the attendance in the Pentagon will be less then what the teams are used to, though fans are already eager to sell-out the games.
    The Bucks are the first to travel to South Dakota, facing the Timberwolves in an exhibition match on October 10th. Minnesota has played in Sioux Falls five times in franchise history, most recently in 2010 at the Sioux Falls Arena. 2013’s game was facilitated mostly by the Skyforce’s relationship with the professional team, and the pairing with Milwaukee was meant to keep fans within the Midwest from traveling too far.
    Wisconsin’s visit to its neighbor two-states over was initiated through former player, now staff, Joe Krabbenhoft. A Sioux Falls native, Krabbenhoft’s father Kelby is CEO of Sanford Health, the Pentagon’s main funding source. The St. Johns Red Storm will meet the Badgers on November 8th for the first-ever college game played at the venue. This will also be the season opener for both teams. The pair have not met since the Badgers bested St. Johns in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament, and Wisconsin is undefeated in the four overall meetings between the two.
    A national network is expected to broadcast the November 8thWisconsin game, though negotiations for the rights have not been completed. Tip-off times have also not been announced.

  • Brewers Ticket Prices For Home Games At Miller Park

    What are our Brewers ticket prices, you say?  The short answer is “it depends.” Just like any hot ticket, prices can vary from game to game, and the time of year.  There are days when a Brewers ticket is a bargain, and times when tickets are priced higher due to market conditions. Grabbing a bargain priced ticket might mean going to Miller Park on a weeknight, or sitting in the upper-most level.  Higher priced tickets are usually the better seats at Miller Park.

          ·         Sitting in the infield, just above the visitors’ dugout is one of the best places to see a game.  

    ·         A ticket for a seat down the left field line has its advantages. It’s easy to see the arc of the pitch from that area, and you never know when a foul ball will come your way.

    ·         Seats behind the screen are great, but some feel that they lose out on a bit of the action.

    ·         If you get the chance, check out the NYCE Stadium Club area out in left field.

    ·         Seats in the 400 level offer a bird’s eye view of the field.

    Finally, the Brewers’ opponent can certainly influence the price of our tickets.  Cubs fans call Miller Park “Wrigley North.” When twenty thousand Cubs fans drive north, tickets can be a bit harder to find. During inter league play, ticket sales are brisk.  It’s best to plan far ahead on those occasions.

    Whether you are sitting in the uppermost level or just up from the on deck circle, you will find that Miller Park is a great place to see a Brewers game.  This summer, spend some time at the stadium.

  • BMO Harris Bradley Center Events 2013 | Ticket King Wisconsin

    The BMO Harris Bradley Center’s summer and fall schedules are modest this year compared to most around this time. Only four events are planned through the end of 2013 currently, though more are likely to be added throughout the remainder of the season. But, despite the sparse line-up, a few of the acts coming to the downtown Milwaukee arena are sure to be sell-outs.

    The Danceworks Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap Competition will roll into the Bradley Center on May 18. Hosting their seventh annual tournament at the venue, Danceworks is a city-wide initiative to get underprivileged youth involved in art and physical activity. The non-profit works directly with Milwaukee Public Schools during the school year, and many of the competitors in the event were first introduced to dance through the various school programs.

    The 2013 Danceworks Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap Competition is free and open to the public. Over 2,500 participants are signed-up to take-part this year, one of the largest groups in the history of the event, accomplished with the help of a new partnership with Milwaukee County Transit. Free bus rides to and from the Bradley Center will be available on the day of the competition, and Goodwill plans to provide dance-appropriate clothing for children at the event. Doors open at 10AM on Saturday, May 18th.

    UFC Fighting Championship Series In Milwaukee

    The ever-popular Ultimate Fighting Championship series returns tothe Bradley Center in August. Dubbed UFC 164, the August 31st fights will be the first in Milwaukee since Dan Hardy and Chris Lytle headlined UFC on Versus 5 at the Bradley Center in 2011. UFC 164’s featured fighters have not been announced yet.

    Harley-Davidson will be the premier sponsor of this year’s event. The Milwaukee-based motorcycle manufacturer will celebrate its 110thanniversary as part of the UFC’s Hometown Throwdown series, which honors long-time American companies by scheduling fights in their home cities.

    For its part, Harley-Davidson is offering fans the chance to win a custom designed “Street-Bob” motorcycle that will be introduced in the center of the main stage on the day of the event. Scheduled to round-out the 2013 season are pair of iconic acts that will come to the Bradley Center in September and November, respectively.

    County Music Award winner and pop-sensation Blake Shelton will bring his Ten Times Crazier Tour to the Bradley Center on September 13th. The second nation-wide tour in as many years for the accomplished vocalist, Shelton is coming-off of three consecutive Male Vocalist of the Year awards from the CMA, as well as the 2012 Entertainer of the Year title. His current tour will promote his new album, Based on a True Story, which has garnered unanimous praise from critics and fans, as well as two hit singles that have reigned at the top of charts for weeks. Fellow country-starts Jana Kramer and Easton Corbin will join Shelton on his Milwaukee stop. 

    P!nk’s The Truth About Love tour was not originally scheduled for a show at the Bradley Center this year, though popular-demand has forced the decade-long superstar to extend the tour of her seventh album. Included in that extension will be a November 1st stop in Milwaukee, a show that is already selling tickets quicker than almost any other event at the Bradley Center this year. Acclaim for the tour has been ample in reviews throughout its run thus-far, especially for director Baz Halpin’s visual accompaniment to P!nk’s stellar voice range and physicality during her performances.

  • Who Did The Packers Pick In The 2013 NFL Draft?

    The Green Bay Packers took eleven players away from the 2013 draft over the weekend. Locking-in star quarterback Aaron Rodgers until 2019 just days earlier, Packers staff was free to make some unexpected moves later in the process, though they stuck to conventional wisdom to open their choices. 
    UCLA defensive end Datone Jones received the first nod from Green Bay, representing the team’s sole first round pick at twenty-sixth overall. Jones will likely be in the running for a starting spot come training camp. Running back Johnathan Franklin was also taken from UCLA by the Packers this year, getting the call in the fourth round. He joins a ground corps that has lacked consistent talent for a number of seasons, as does Alabama’s Eddie Lacy who went late in the second.
    Nine of Green Bay’s picks came in the fourth round or later. Along with Franklin, tackles David Bakhtiari and J.C. Tretter were taken in the fourth. The pair is slotted to hopefully revive last year’s struggling offensive line, as both are considered dynamic linesman who can play multiple positions.
    Micah Hyde and Josh Boyd are another duo who are expected to change positions in the pros. Making up the Packers fifth round picks, the corner and tackle will likely start the summer at safety and nose-tackle, respectively.
    Coming late in the draft were four picks that analysts are labeling as experimental. Out of schools like Maryland and Grand Valley State, wide receivers Charles Johnson and Kevin Dorsey and linebackers Nate Palmer and Sam Barrington were virtual unknowns coming into the draft class. General Manager Ted Thompson told reporters that with some available salary cap left over from the Rodgers deal, he and his staff chose to search for some diamonds in the rough. He hopes that camp will prove to reveal a couple that are worth developing into backups or perhaps future starters.

    Jimmy Buffett has the most loyal fan base in music today.   • Foster Fest Milwaukee | Hotel Foster To Host Four Day Celebration

    One of Milwaukee’s trendiest new hangouts is hosting a four day music festival to celebrate its second birthday this weekend. The Hotel Foster at 2028 North Avenue will kick-off the inaugural Foster Fest on Thursday, two year’s after the bar opened its doors in 2011. The event will be sponsored by Pabst, Dope Folks Records, Video Villains, Milwaukee Home, and Seizure Chicken.
    A number of local and national acts will headline the 2013 Foster Fest. Hotel Foster has become known as a favorite music destination on the weekends for college students in the surrounding neighborhood, hosting concerts that span the genres of today’s scene. The bar invited many of those past acts back for this year’s festival.
    Hailing from Milwaukee, hip-hop’s Kid Millions and Klassik will open Foster Fest on Thursday, May second. The pair is familiar with the east side of the city, having played multiple venues in neighborhoods like River West and Brady Street. Cover for the night has not yet been announced.
    Complimenting Kid Millions and Klassik’s performance the night before, Har Mar Superstar will bring his own brand of provocative R&B to Foster Fest on Friday, May third. A national hit since debuting in the early 2000’s, Sean Tillman’s alter-ego treats fans to an enticing live show that often involves quirky covers of innuendo-soaked bangers mixed with low-brow strip-tease. The Saltshakers, Sat. Nite Duets, and Kiings will also perform.
    Full-day covers for Saturday’s and Sunday’s acts will be $10. A plethora of talent will be showcased throughout the two days, including Djs Platinumstein and Brandon Malacara, Jaill, Colleen Green, Rio Turbo, The Generationals, and Brass Beds.

  • Red Wings Playoff Tickets Ready To Ship | Ticket King Milwaukee

    Who holds the longest playoff streak for playoff appearances in pro sports? It’s the Detroit Red Wings.  After last night’s win, the Wings are just one point shy of moving on to another playoff run.  The team has just one more game to score that point, or the streak is broken. Red Wings playoff tickets are ready to ship if they make it. Here is the breakdown of the last three teams on the bubble.

    The Red Wings need just one more goal and they are in.  They play the Stars on Saturday, and the puck drops at 7pm Eastern.  That’s an away game. If the Wild collect two points along with the Wings grabbing one, that would force the Dallas Stars out of playoff contention. If Columbus loses to the Predators in regulation, they knock themselves out of the playoffs.  The Red Wings could still lose to Dallas and get a shot at the playoffs, but they would need major help.  This is one of those hockey seasons where fans might not know who is in and who is out until the clock runs out on the final regular season NHL game on Saturday night.

  • Packers 2013 Schedule | Key Games And Match Ups

    The 2013 Green Bay Packers schedule is out, and the team will be facing some strong opponents, starting with game number one against San Francisco. Will Green Bay allow the 49rs to win this third match up in less than 13 months? Kaepernick and Co. will not surprise anyone this upcoming season, and the Packers will have all summer to prepare for that mobile monster of a QB.

    The team will also face the current Super Bowl champs in week #6.  It’s been four seasons since the two teams went head to head, and nearly nine years since the Packers visited Baltimore. Nobody wants to remember that game but if you need a refresher, the good guys lost by 45 points. 

    On week #2, the Redskins come to Green Bay.  Will “RG-3” be back to full strength? He’s another one of those mobile QB threats that have the ability to stun opposing defenses. That’s also the first Sunday afternoon game, so expect the fans to come out in big numbers.

    On October 27, Greg Jennings and the Vikings will play host. Will we see Mr. Woodson in a Packers uniform, breaking up a pass intended for his former team mate?  Will Jennings be the key piece of the puzzle for the Vikings? All questions will be answered in due time.

    During the stretch between that first Vikings game and the Thanksgiving contest at Detroit, the Packers will take on The Eagles, Giants, Vikings (again,) and the Bears.  This season is no picnic for our beloved Packers. The team will close out the regular season at Chicago, in a game that could have huge implications, should one or the other need a win to clinch. See you at Lambeau Field!
