Summerfest Bag Policy Updated for 2026

Summerfest’s New Bag & Carry-In Policy: What You Can (and Can’t) Bring in 2026

If you’re heading to Summerfest this year, there’s one thing you’ll want to check before you leave home: The updated bag and carry-in policy. The festival has rolled out a stricter entry policy that changes what types of bags are allowed and what will get turned away at the gate. If you’ve been to Summerfest in past years, don’t assume the same rules apply. Here’s a straightforward breakdown of what’s changed and how to avoid any surprises when you arrive.

What’s Different About the Carry-In and Bag Policy This Year?

Summerfest has moved toward a more structured entry process, similar to what you’d see at major sporting events or large stadium concerts. The biggest shift is a new focus on bag restrictions and security screening. For attendees, that means less flexibility on what you can bring, but potentially faster entry once you’re in line.

The Clear Bag Rule Explained

The most noticeable change is the introduction of a clear bag requirement. If you plan to bring a bag larger than a small personal item, it now needs to be transparent. Clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags are acceptable, as long as they stay within the approved size limits. Permitted bags include: Clear bags that are no larger than 12″x12″x6″ in size. Small clutch bags that are no larger than 6″x9″. Fanny packs no larger than 6″x9″.

This type of policy is already common at NFL stadiums and large-scale venues, and Summerfest is now following that same approach. Ticket King has clear bags that comply with the new policy. Stop in our Milwaukee office during work hours, and we’ll be happy to provide you with a free bag to take to Summerfest 2026.

Are Any Non-Clear Bags Allowed?

Yes, but only if they’re small.

Compact items like clutches, small purses, or waist packs are still allowed, provided they stay within a limited size range. These are intended for essentials like your phone, wallet, and keys. If your bag is larger than that, it should be clear, or you may be asked to return it to your car. There have been situations where people have abandoned their bags at the gate. If you do, that bag will be removed from the area. It’s worth the trip back to your vehicle, so you can properly store your belongings.

Items That Will Likely Get Turned Away

This is where many returning attendees could run into issues. Items that were once common at Summerfest are now restricted or no longer permitted. These include:

  • Backpacks of any kind
  • Larger purses that are not clear
  • Oversized bags that exceed entry limits
  • Coolers or food containers
  • Outside food and beverages

If you’ve traditionally packed for a full day at the grounds, you’ll want to rethink that approach this year.

What to Expect at the Gate

Entry into the festival now includes a more consistent screening process. All attendees should expect to pass through security checkpoints, which may include metal detection and bag inspections. While this may sound like an added step, these systems are designed to keep lines moving efficiently. The smoother your setup (and the simpler your bag), the faster you’ll get through.

Exceptions for Medical and Family Needs

There are a few important exceptions to keep in mind. Guests with medical requirements can bring necessary items, and diaper bags are permitted for families. In some cases, you can also carry a small non-clear pouch inside a larger clear bag for personal items. If you fall into one of these categories, it’s still a good idea to keep things as streamlined as possible to avoid delays.

Tips to Avoid Delays at Summerfest

  • Use a clear bag if you’re bringing more than the basics
  • Stick to small personal items when possible
  • Double-check your items before heading out

A little preparation can save you a lot of time at the entrance.

Why This Matters for Your Summerfest Experience

This policy change isn’t just about security; it changes how you plan your day. For longtime Summerfest fans, the adjustment may take a little getting used to. But for first-time visitors, it’s simply the new standard. The key takeaway: keep it simple, pack light, and know the rules before you go.

Final Thoughts

Summerfest remains one of the best live music experiences in the country, and a smooth entry helps set the tone for the rest of your day. Make sure your bag, and everything in it, meets the updated guidelines, and you’ll spend less time at the gate and more time enjoying the shows at all the stages.

Summerfest 2025 Headliners

The first of the Summerfest 2025 Headliners is none other than Def Leppard. The band celebrates their 49th year in the rock scene on their current tour. Rick Savage, Joe Elliott, Rick Allen, Phil Collen, and Vivian Campbell made their mark in the early 1980s heavy metal scene in England. How did the band break out and become worldwide rockers? They listened to the advice of producer Mutt Lange and produced their breakout album titled High ‘n’ Dry. Pyromania was the album that followed, and it just proved that the High ‘n’ Dry was not a fluke. Their 1987 album, titled Hystaria, was a massive hit for the band. The 22-time platinum album was the last album produced by Lange. Def Leppard would go on to produce a total of 12 albums, with their last effort titled Diamond Star Halos. Def Leppard performs on June 19.

Hozier performs at Summerfest on June 20. Hozier’s self-titled album hit number two on the US charts. The album went platinum in Ireland, Germany, England, New Zealand, the Netherlands, and the United States. Hozier started writing music in 2008, but he waited until 2014 to go solo. His song, Take Me to Church was nominated for a Grammy. His 2025 tour starts in Bogota, Colombia, on May 21. He’ll wrap up that tour on October 14 in Mexico City.

Lainey Wilson will perform at Summerfest on June 26. Wilson hit it big with her song “Things a Man Oughta Know”. That hit came in 2020 after signing with BBR Music Group. Her album, titled Bell Bottom Country, earned Wilson a Grammy nomination for Best Country Album. Wilson can also be found on the show Yellowstone. Wilson is thrilled to be a Summerfest 2025 headliner after years of hard work in the music business.

Benson Boone Hits Summerfest 2025 Stage

On July 3, Benson Boone will hit the Am-Fam Summerfest stage. Boone made an impression with the single “Ghost Town” in 2021. He went through the talent show route to try to make a splash online. He left American Idol after making it a few rounds and decided that TikTok was a better channel for auditioning to various record labels and talent scouts. That effort paid off when he was discovered by Night Street Records owner Dan Reynolds. Evan Blair and Jackson LaFrantz co-wrote Benson’s biggest hit song, “Beautiful Things.” Boone has just one album to his name, but with good songwriters producing hits that he can sing, he’s got a shot at making a few more songs top the charts before he ages out of the teen fan base he’s known to attract.

The last of the Summerfest 2025 headliners will be The Lumineers on July 5. It all started in 2005 when Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites started hammering out cover songs and plying their trade in the New York City area. Like so many other bands, they started with cover songs. Eventually, the duo wrote their own songs and then moved out of New York. 2010 is truly when The Lumineers found their footing and got signed to Onto Entertainment for proper management. Their 2011 song “Ho Hey” generated a big buzz, and The Lumineers were courted by various record labels. The band made the wise choice to keep some of their creative control and released their first full-length album on an independent label. That isn’t to say that the band wasn’t supported by huge labels. They were licensed out to Decca and Dine Alone records, just to name two huge labels.

The Lumineers produced five albums in the past 12 years and globetrotted on four world tours that spanned seven years in total. For this tour, the band is supporting the release of their album titled “Automatic.”
